Today, beautiful as it was, was a not gardening day. Today was community activism day, supporting the two grassroots groups that are advocating for saving our county's rural lands from unplanned and unprincipled development. In the morning: creating a project description and budget for a proposed grant application. In the afternoon: attending the monthly meeting of the Calaveras Planning Coalition. Most of the news today was not good. The path to wise planning in this county is an uphill battle. Example: a proposal before the Planning Commission to allow golf courses and related development on any agricultural-zoned parcel, anywhere in the county. At a time when we are on the brink of serious food insecurity in our country and should encourage all the agriculture we can.
The bright side of the day was that although we didn't dig in the garden, we ate right out of it! For lunch and dinner we had slices of a yummy crustless quiche packed with our chard and kale. A recipe of my own invention. And a salad of freshly picked arugula. I love that we can create almost a whole meal from things we grew ourselves. If we had chickens, even the eggs could have been produced on our land!
